Growing numbers

Today we had a record in visitors! Over 1.200 people came to see our designs, and you can see by their faces and hear by their questions that real interest lays behind that. Many groups of interested people. Families, professionals, locals, foreigners, artists and designers. Large groups of design and design related students came to visit our exhibition. It was clearly a day of enthusiastic learning about Lapland for many. The businesscards, which we made in accordance with the special style of the exhibition and put next to each of the 18 designs, are taken avid by every one. All day it was so busy, people walking in and out continuously. As hosts we asked ourselves when seeing so many people: 'What will the weekend bring at us?!!'. It will be good!

On display

While the designs are being photographed and looked at in detail by so many, here we show you too a little overview of how our designs from Lapland are present at the exhibition. Later we post more.

Quote of the day

'This room is so quiet and serene by itself, it gives the atmosphere of a land of snow through the white. A meditation where i can find beautiful objects on display.'

In the spotlights!

As the week starts to attract more and more visitors from abroad, also our space in TAC has become known on the route. Several journalists, from regional and international magazines, online forums and news tabloids have found us. From England, Spain, Paris and the Netherlands, both foreign and Dutch journalists come to visit, because they have 'heard good stories'. Today a television camera crew came to shoot our exhibition as a news item for their regional news. To be broadcasted next week to show what has been going on in Eindhoven during DDW2012 on the international field in TAC.

TAC

Our host, the Temporary Art Centre TAC, where we reside, is a lively building aiming year through at regular cultural events pointing at design and art projects in a wide range. Several exhibition spaces, a theatre space, a main hall and restaurant and ateliers of designers are located here. During Dutch Design Week, in the spaces next to us other international collectives are showing their work. Belgian, Islandic, Brasilian and Turkish designers collaborate in smaller or larger collectives. Among others furniture, pottery, jewelry, fashion, technology, green solutions and more conceptual and futuristic design. For example in the main hall of the art centre, we find 'The Machine', a collective from Belgium and Germany. They fill up a whole hall with different machines producing 'something' and showing the process, how it takes place, and how the interaction between a machine and people these days takes place. Here is shown many ways 3 D printing is getting nearer to our daily lives, and how not only those, but also other machines will influence us in near future.

Quote of the day

'This exhibition about Design from Lapland is so good to see, because of the real products that you can touch and feel. Scandinavian style, handicraft combined with industrial manufacturing and the high quality of details are very much appreciated and shown in all these designs here.'

'Design from Lapland'

Designers from 7 established companies and 11 design students from the University of Lapland and consortium, show their works during these 9 days of Dutch Design Week. Our exhibition called 'Design from Lapland' gives an overview of what is going on in the field of product design in Lapland. 'Design from Lapland' is located at TAC, the Temporary Art Centre in Eindhoven. It is a central place, on the main walking route between several important design events during the week. Therefor very visible. This first day already showed it was a success! Over 500 people, ranging from professionals to interested individuals to students to journalists visited our exhibition. At one point we had to stop counting, so busy it was! A brilliant start, with nice remarks from many visitors. On this blog we will highlight every day a special 'quote of the day' to share with you the feelings the visitors get, when seeing our exhibition.

Our exhibition

'Design from Lapland' represents what is going on in Finnish Lapland in the field of arctic product design. Designers and their products are chosen for their high quality, new techniques and different ways of manufacturing, and for their fresh design ideas. Representing the extreme nature, cold, wild and local use of materials in general, visitors are pleasantly surprised by the good quality and diversity of all the designs they see. Fashion, products like lamps, stools and table, snow design and jewelry are shown.

Designers

The 7 design companies from Lapland participating are: Aika Feltworks, JAUR, Kaisa Sirén, Paperivalo, Puuhovi, Taigakoru and Treeform. The 11 students are: Tarja Alahuhta, Esther Dorsman, Mauri Härkönen, Elina Hilden, Riikka Jefremoff, Salla-Mari Koistinen, Sanna Konola, Netta Korhonen, Marjo Kujala, Jenni Marttila and Hanna-Riina Vuontisjärvi.

The start!

On Friday evening the 19th of October in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, the 11th edition of the internationally well known Dutch Design Week 2012 started with a ceremony for all participants!

Dutch Design Week

Dutch Design Week is an internationally renowned design week. The 2nd biggest design week of Europe, known for conceptual, innovative design and always showing the newest design trends. With a growing number of visitors each year, and expecting over 180.000 this year, many locations in the brainport city of Eindhoven are changed into design areas and host over 300 design events, such as fashion shows, products, lectures and surprising design activities. Showing mostly Dutch design as well as international design. Emphazising recent works and future developments in the field.

Opening party

A swirling opening party located in the creative centre of the city, the old Philips factory buildings, invited all participating national and international designers and designer collectives to join. As representatives of our exhibition 'Design from Lapland', we were present too! In a relaxing atmosphere, we enjoyed the opening show, together with all other designers and organisations. Standing around a circle stage, we watched video interviews with designers on big screens, talks by the organisers, and references to global design and design trends. In a surrounding of music, dance and a small fashion show. Dutch Design Week had pleasantly begun!

Quote of the day

'Design trends we live in now are locality, sustainability, food design, mobility and new technologies.'
