Arctic Design draws inspiration from the extremes. The location on the Arctic Circle, the cold, the wild, the traditions and cutting edge technologies combined with the delicate relationship to nature can be seen at the Arctic Design stand in Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair. Arctic Design is introduced through unique products from seven Arctic companies: Hornwork, Juho / Eero, Keramiikkapaja Maari, Oppas Lapland, Paperivalo, Puusepänliike Pihlaja, Rohila Design and Tarja Alahuhta.

The northern location in Finnish Lapland and inspiration from Arctic nature and natural materials are the common denominators for the design products presented in the Arctic Design stand. The impressive reindeer antler chandelier by Hornwork is a focal point in any space. The young designers of Juho / Eero create sustainable, functional and aesthetic design solutions. The incredible shapes and materials of Lapland’s nature are the source of inspiration for Maari’s Koivu ceramic series. The home textile collection by Oppas Lapland includes functional and playful high quality products created by young Lappish designers. Paperivalo’s minimalist and elegant luminaires bring lively watermark patterns to life as light penetrates paper – the main material of the collection. Traditions and the present day meet in the design of hand-crafted solid wood furniture by Puusepänliike Pihlaja. Tarja Alahuhta’s Snow Weave ceramics are decorated with carvings, creating an illusion of the frosty winter magic.

The designers behind the products share the ambition for a clearly defined design style, sustainability, timelessness and the belief that less is more. Nature and traditions are strong foundations for Arctic Design. Re-inventing and discovering fresh means of expression result in design that combines the demands of the modern day, world-class expertise and creative thinking. Arctic Design sets up in Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair at stand number C04:49.

The impressive reindeer antler chandelier by Hornwork is a focal point in any space. The principal material, reindeer antler, has been utilised in the north for decades. Hornwork wants to maintain and preserve the old traditions of working with this renewable material. Every antler is carefully selected to create these unique products.

Juho/Eero is composed of two designers always on the lookout for new and interesting creative challenges that could make use of their combination of shared reference points and complementary skill sets. More often than not, the projects undertaken are born out of curiosity and driven by a desire to create meaningful, aesthetically pleasing things of lasting quality. At the fair the duo showcase two products: Planoe and Apoto. Planoe was created as a light and sleek alternative to the generally rather bulky looking media furniture. Since Planoe is open from every side, it functions equally well as a coffee table, for instance. Apoto aims to challenge and augment the idea of what an electric candelabra should or could be, from appearances to quality and usage.

The incredible shapes and materials of Lapland’s nature are the source of inspiration for Maari ́s Koivu ceramic series. Koivu – Birch – the tough lady of the forest is part of every Finn’s soul and the basis for this delicate and beautiful collection. In Raku ceramics the ruggedness and unpredictability of the material is fascinating. The outcome of firing cannot be controlled, so every piece is one-of-a-kind – just as unique as the elements of nature.

Oppas Lapland designs and produces home textiles. The Collection includes items for both adults and children: bed sheets of cotton-satin and kitchen textiles among others. The company focuses on producing functional and playful high quality products created by young Lappish designers. All the designs have a strong connection with the attractive, colourful and diverse nature of Lapland, its natural phenomenon and four different seasons.

Paperivalo’s minimalist and elegant luminaires are efficient elements of interior decoration and create a harmonious atmosphere. The transparent lines on the paper and surfaces of different thicknesses create lively patterns that come to life as light penetrates the paper. The main colour of the collection, white, symbolises snow and the brilliant white light of Lapland. The watermark created by paper artist Sirpa Kivilompolo is a miracle hidden in a sheet of handmade paper and revealed by light to portray stories and translucent images.

Puusepänliike Pihlaja focuses on creating solid wood furniture for both public and private spaces. The skilfully finished pieces of the Suutari -collection are handmade from white oak. The airy and light design of the Suutari table introduces the design of an old cobbler’s table into the present day. The youthful, proficient carpenters of Puusepänliike Pihlaja also design and manufacture unique furniture according to customers’ specifications.

Snow Weave handmade decorative ceramics are designed and manufactured by Tarja Alahuhta in limited (numbered) small series. Inspired by the magical beauty of snowflakes and ice crystals the dishes are decorated with carvings, creating an illusion of the frosty winter. The elegant ceramics reflecting the arctic and northern light are both beautiful and functional articles.
